Cobalt Hour is one of Yumi Arai’s essential 70s albums, balancing soft songwriting with beautifully arranged studio grooves. Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, Tatsuo Hayashi, Masataka Matsutoya, Nobu Saito, and background voices including Tatsuro Yamashita, Taeko Ohnuki, Minako Yoshida, and Hi-Fi Set give the record real depth. “Rouge no Dengon” is the obvious classic, but “Cobalt Hour,” “Hana Kikou,” and “Nani mo Kikanaide” show the album’s refined, city-pop-adjacent strength.
