Amino Co Dé Ji gets much stronger once the names behind it come into focus. Toshifumi Hinata brings a cool, spacious, almost chamber-like elegance to his tracks, while Makoto Yano adds a more off-center, art-pop intelligence, and Akira Nishihira holds the album together with crisp synth-pop architecture. What keeps it from becoming just another 1986 pop record is Yukako Hayase herself: that detached, wistful voice makes the whole album feel slightly unreal, as if sophisticated city pop had drifted a little sideways into leftfield territory.
