Rather than fitting neatly into jazz, fusion, or new wave alone, IQ 179 captures Yasuaki Shimizu at a point where those boundaries start to break apart. Backed by Mariah-related players and guests including Ryuichi Sakamoto and Minako Yoshida, the album moves through angular electronics, restrained but elastic grooves, and a distinctly subversive pop instinct. It feels experimental, but never academic—restless, stylish, and still startlingly ahead of its time.
