Far East Express captures a fascinating side of Yasuaki Shimizu before his sound moved deeper into experimental and electronic territory. Tony Levin’s bass and Andy Newmark’s drums give the record a heavy, fluid groove, while “Ain’t Nothing But ‘G’” and “Summer Time” bring a beautifully mellow side and the Beatles cover “Day Tripper” turns surprisingly dark and funky. Sharp sax, deep bass, New York session precision, and just enough strangeness to hint at what Shimizu would become next. An essential early chapter for anyone digging Japanese fusion, rare groove, Mariah, or Shimizu’s later leftfield work.
