A seriously overlooked piece of Japanese electronic music history. Released in 1979, this LP collects prize-winning works from Roland’s Synthesizer Tape Contest and features remarkably early recordings by future underground innovators including Kenji Konishi (DADA / 4-D / later P-MODEL), Mutsuhiko Izumi (DADA / KENNEDY), Takumi Iwasaki (FILMS / TPO) and Yasushi Utsunomiya.
Forget the almost instructional-looking sleeve — the music goes deep: primitive minimal synth, strange DIY electronics, cosmic prog, proto-techno and beautifully atmospheric ambient such as Kenichi Ren’s “Uminari Ga Suru,” alongside Fumito Ono’s hypnotic oriental cosmic dancer “Spanish Wind.”
An exceptionally rare snapshot of Japan’s electronic underground just before the 1980s exploded. Much, much better than the cover suggests.
