Tomoko Aran’s 1985 album “Imitation Lonely” on Warner-Pioneer finds her moving from early city pop into a sleek mid-80s synth-pop / urban funk sound: Linn-style drum machines, fat bass and glossy digital keys, arranged and performed by an all-star studio team including Akira Jimbo and Minoru Mukaiya of Cassiopeia, Hiroshi Sato, Yuji Toriyama and Tetsu Nakamura, produced by Shunsuke Miyazumi.
