Tomoko Aran’s essential 1983 third album, produced by Daikoh Nagato and sound-produced by Masatoshi Nishimura, with future FENCE OF DEFENSE members Kenji Kitajima and Wataru Yamada also involved.
Far more adventurous than a typical City Pop record, Fuyü-Kükan moves between sleek electro-funk, icy new wave, hard-edged guitars and dreamy urban grooves, with Emulator and synthesizers giving the whole album a strikingly futuristic atmosphere. Highlights include “I’m In Love,” “Body To Body” and the Tetsuro Oda-penned “Midnight Pretenders” — later famously sampled by The Weeknd for “Out of Time.”
A true landmark of early-’80s Japanese pop that still sounds remarkably fresh today.
