Scorpio “The Great American Music Band” is a 1979 Japanese jazz-funk session by a fusion group led by saxophonist Tatsuhiko Arakawa. The standout is A2, a mid-tempo mellow funk cut with warm electric piano, sharp horns and a deep groove that’s perfect for sampling and late-night spins. The surrounding fusion and cinematic jazz tunes also shine thanks to the raw, in-the-room sound you only get from a direct-to-disc recording. Still a fairly under-the-radar title even among Japanese jazz and mellow-funk collectors, and an original LDD pressing in such beautiful near-mint condition almost never turns up.
