OBI included (rare for this title) — a seriously under-the-radar Japanese jazz-funk/coastal groove gem from 1978, and the kind of record people don’t let go once they hear it.
Built around composer Yusuke Horiguchi, it’s powered by a ridiculous session lineup: Tatsuo Hayashi (drums) driving crisp, pocket-heavy patterns, Tsugutoshi Goto (bass) staying melodic but locked, Masaki Matsubara (guitar) adding that signature clean, fluid funk touch, and Jun Sato (keys) laying down sunlit chords and synth color.
What makes California Surfer special is that it’s not a “one or two tracks” situation—the sequencing stays breezy and tropical, but the groove stays tight all the way through. It plays like a full soundtrack for a coastal drive: bright on top, serious underneath.
