Japan Original Pressing. Promo Copy!
One of the crown jewels of Japanese City Pop — a flawless 1982 world of midnight soul, jazz-funk and sophisticated AOR, wrapped around one of the genre’s most mysterious voices.
Takako Mamiya released only one album, but Love Trip became one of the defining records of Japanese City Pop. Sound-produced by jazz saxophonist Genji Sawai and surrounded by an extraordinary cast including Kazuo Shiina, Hiroyuki Namba, Yoshihiro Naruse, Yutaka Uehara, Akira Inoue, Tsunehide Matsuki and Shigeharu Mukai, every detail feels impossibly refined.
The title track immediately establishes its nocturnal elegance, while “Chinese Restaurant” moves with a beautifully sophisticated urban groove. “Mayonaka no Joke” is simply untouchable — melancholy, sensual and effortlessly funky — and “What A Broken Heart Can Do” closes the album with the same perfect balance of sadness and polish that runs through the entire record.
What separates Love Trip from countless records later grouped under the City Pop name is its atmosphere. Nothing feels forced or designed to sound fashionable. The bass, keyboards, horns and strings leave just enough space around Mamiya’s understated voice, creating a world that feels glamorous and lonely at exactly the same time.
More than four decades later, it still sounds almost impossibly perfect. Not simply a City Pop classic, but one of the genre’s true masterpieces — a record that helped define how the world now imagines the sound of Japanese nights.

We visually inspect every record, and we clean each one before shipping (play-testing when needed). Even new or great-looking vinyl—especially some Japanese pressings—can have light background noise. We grade carefully by eye and ear, but it’s still a human call, so please check the notes before buying.
