1972 CBS/Sony SX-68 Sound — Afro-spiritual JJazz with Masayuki Takayanagi: Sadao Watanabe “Sadao Watanabe”
Issued in Japan in 1972 on CBS/Sony’s SX-68 Sound series (catalog SOPL-21-XJ), this self-titled set captures Sadao Watanabe fresh from Africa, folding Swahili-titled tunes into a hard, modal, Afro-jazz-funk language. The band is stacked: Masayuki Takayanagi (g), Fumio Itabashi (p, el-p), Hiroshi Fukumura (tb), Mitsuaki Furuno (b), and Arihide Kurata (ds); engineered by Okihiko Sugano. The A-side moves from the scene-setter “Sasa” into the spiritual-funk driver “Mtoto,” then to the fluted “Mtelenko,” and the modal waltz “Poromoko La Maji.” Side B keeps the pulse—“Kijiji,” “Barabara,” “Mombasa”—before a beautiful duo breather “Upepo” (flute + piano) and the crisp closer “Umeme.” For DJs/selectors: clean count-ins and open rhythm beds abound (“Mtoto,” “Barabara”), while “Upepo” is perfect for late-night interludes. Originals on SOPL-21-XJ are the reference copies.

About the Condition
About the Condition
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| S (Sealed) | Still sealed in factory wrap. Never played. |
| M (Mint) | Perfect condition. Looks unplayed with no signs of use. Typically used for records that are brand new or opened but never played. |
| EX (Excellent) | Very clean. May have light scuffs or hairline marks, but plays perfectly. |
| VG+ (Very Good Plus) | Minor wear, light surface noise, no major flaws — a solid average used copy. |
| VG (Very Good) | Visible wear and surface noise. Plays through without skipping. |
| G+ (Good Plus) | Heavily used. Significant wear or scratches, but still playable. |
+ / − may be added to indicate slight variations (e.g. VG+, EX−).
We visually inspect every record, and we clean each one before shipping (play-testing when needed). Even new or great-looking vinyl—especially some Japanese pressings—can have light background noise. We grade carefully by eye and ear, but it’s still a human call, so please check the notes before buying.
