Quatre works best when framed beyond straightforward kayokyoku. Released in 1979, it sits at an early point where Japanese pop was absorbing synth textures, cool metropolitan atmosphere, and a more refined modernist sensibility. With Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi appearing in the credits, the album gains an added layer of sharpness and sophistication, making it feel closer to elegant early Japanese synth-pop than to ordinary pop of its time.
