Tamago is the kind of album that opens up much wider than standard “Japanese pop” tags suggest. Built from Qujila’s surreal songwriting sense and sharpened by arrangements from Yasuaki Shimizu and Seigen Ono, it moves between art-pop, leftfield new wave, and oddly weightless chamber-like motion, with a distinctly foreign spaciousness from its Paris recording and Berlin mix. Restless, playful, and quietly strange, it is one of those records that feels more singular the deeper you go.
