Osamu Kitajima pushes his unique fusion of Japanese tradition and Western jazz even deeper on this remarkable 1980 album. Abraham Laboriel, Russ Kunkel, Alex Acuña and Victor Feldman form the core, with Bobby Hutcherson and John Klemmer also appearing alongside Kazu Matsui’s haunting shakuhachi.
Biwa, shamisen and koto weave through Rhodes, synthesizers, funky bass lines and intricate percussion, creating a sound that is spiritual, cinematic and deeply groovy. “Golden Mean,” “Where Is The Real Japan?” and the atmospheric “Breath Of Night” are especially stunning.
