Miki Matsubara takes a sharper turn on this underrated 1984 album, with Katsutoshi Morizono of Yonin Bayashi / PRISM handling the sound production and guitar, alongside Akira Wada and a tight live band.
Moving away from polished City Pop toward a tougher 8-beat feel, Cool Cut blends crisp guitars, jazzy chords and mellow urban grooves without losing Matsubara’s effortless sophistication. “Manatsu no Game,” “Manhattan no Kakera,” “Caribbean Night” and “French Cinema” show a cooler, slightly darker side of her catalog.
