A killer 1983 Japanese rock / boogie obscurity — but the real addiction is “Get To Paradise,” a strange cosmic reggae-funk cut with dubby synths, loose vocals and an irresistible offbeat groove.
Mari Kaneko’s first solo album, released in 1983 with an incredible cast including Char, Jun Sato, Johnny Yoshinaga, Masayoshi Kabe, Shuichi “Ponta” Murakami, Tsuyoshi Kon and Akira Okazawa.
The album moves freely between rock, soul, funk and early-’80s electronics, but “Get To Paradise” is the real secret weapon — a wonderfully addictive cosmic reggae-funk track written by Osamu Ishida, driven by a lo-fi rhythm-box pulse, dubby synths and Kaneko’s effortlessly loose vocal.
“Neon Sign Street Jive,” “Honey” and “Dang Dang” add plenty of groove, but it is that strange, hypnotic “Get To Paradise” that keeps pulling you back.
