Ring ni Kakero is a very interesting early Joe Hisaishi record, long before his Studio Ghibli fame. Made as an image album for Masami Kurumada’s boxing manga, the music moves through synth-driven action themes, funky rhythm tracks, dramatic orchestral moments, and strange electronic atmosphere. “Thunder Drum” is the killer cut, with a deep Afro-cosmic feel, while “Devil Fantasy” and “Techno Crash” push the record into darker electronic territory. A strong pick for listeners into Japanese anime soundtracks, early electronic music, and leftfield Wamono grooves.
