Akiko Yano’s extraordinary 1976 debut splits its world in two: the first side recorded in Los Angeles with Lowell George and members of Little Feat, the second in Japan with the Tin Pan Alley circle.

Her wildly expressive piano and voice twist Japanese folk melodies, jazz, funk and roots rock into something completely her own. “Denwasen” rides a wonderfully loose Little Feat groove, while “Tsugaru Tour” pushes traditional Japanese phrasing into raw, funky territory. Playful, sophisticated and utterly unpredictable — one of the most original Japanese albums of the ’70s.
