Late-night Japanese vocal pop with a faint funk-soul undertow and grown-up city shadows.
Mokuyouza feels like the kind of record that sits just outside ordinary kayōkyoku. Akiko Nakamura, already a veteran singer and actress by this point, brings a voice with history in it, and that weight changes the album. The mood is stylish but not glossy, closer to late-night vocal pop with a slight funk-soul pull than to bright mainstream pop, and that restraint is exactly what gives it character.
